Hilltop villages

Mougins

The driver’s guide

A village coiled like a snail above Cannes, where Picasso spent the last twelve years of his life and where Roger Vergé invented the cuisine du soleil. Today: Europe's first museum devoted to women artists, the continent's largest colony of lotus flowers, and some thirty tables. The addresses I give my own passengers, each with its phone number, its website and directions.

Restaurants

Mougins has called itself a village of gastronomy since Roger Vergé opened Le Moulin here in 1969. The list has moved a great deal: two tables are in the MICHELIN guide's selection, one house has taken on the village's two-star chef, and two others still carry Vergé's mark.

In the old village

The village is entirely pedestrian, coiled around its square. The car park is below it and fills up by midday.

Bohème

Held in the MICHELIN guide's selection, at the entrance to the old village — in what used to be Paloma. Peruvian chef Manuel Rondan cooks over coals: ceviche of wild fish, beef aged by the butcher Alexandre Polmard, Mediterranean dishes. Open all year, Tuesday to Saturday, lunch and dinner.

Denis Fétisson's table on the village square, held in the MICHELIN guide's selection. Mediterranean cooking built around one chosen ingredient that changes with the seasons, and a shaded terrace on the square.

L'Amandier de Mougins
48 avenue Jean-Charles Mallet, Mougins
The house Roger Vergé, twice Michelin-starred, restored in the 1970s: an 11th-century building, once a courthouse given by the Count of Antibes to the monks of Saint-Honorat. It was on the first floor that he set up his École de Cuisine du Soleil. Provençal cooking, a terrace over the rooftops, and the memory of the village.

Outside the village

Three addresses out in the Mougins countryside, between the village and Cannes. None of them can be walked to.

Come Prima
461 avenue Saint-Basile, Mougins
The new house of NICOLAS DECHERCHI, the chef who won two MICHELIN stars at Paloma — now closed. Here he cooks Italian, with Ornella Bettati. This is the address the guides do not have yet: they keep sending people to Paloma's locked door.

Le Candille – Le Mas Candille
Boulevard Clément Rebuffel, Mougins
The gastronomic table of the Mas Candille, a five-star Relais & Châteaux held in the MICHELIN guide's hotel selection, in the middle of a Mediterranean garden. The kitchens are led by Alexandre Boucobza, formerly of the Grand Véfour, La Réserve Paris and La Villa Archange. ⚠️ Open EVERY EVENING, but ONLY FROM 1 APRIL TO 31 OCTOBER.

Le Patio du Moulin de Mougins
1028 avenue Notre-Dame de Vie, Mougins
The former Moulin de Mougins, the restaurant Roger Vergé opened in 1969 with his wife Denise and which held three stars for decades. The house is still there, but it is no longer a gastronomic table: today it is a Mediterranean brasserie at reasonable prices, in the same 16th-century olive mill.

🚕 I'll drive you there — and I'll come back for you when the meal is over. The old village is pedestrian and its car park is tiny: driving up on a summer evening means twenty minutes of circling for nothing.
