Back country

Les gorges du Loup

The driver’s guide

Twenty kilometres of road cut into the cliff above a torrent: two waterfalls at the roadside, a village of violets, a confectioner who has been crystallising flowers since 1949, and a 15th-century Dance of Death in a village church. The addresses I give my own passengers, each with its phone number, its website and directions.

Restaurants

Three tables held in the MICHELIN guide's selection along a single road, plus the inn at Pont-du-Loup. That is a lot for the bottom of a valley — and it is because Tourrettes-sur-Loup has quietly become one of the best places to eat in the back country.

In Tourrettes-sur-Loup

Both are on the Grand'Rue of the hilltop village, fifty metres apart. The village is pedestrian.

Clovis, bistrot gourmand
21 Grand'Rue, Tourrettes-sur-Loup
The table of JULIEN BOUSSEAU, trained in two-star houses before settling here, held in the MICHELIN guide's selection. Produce-driven cooking, a short menu, a terrace hanging over the valley. ⚠️ It is often described as « one star »: the house itself no longer claims one. It is a very good gastronomic bistro, and that is already a great deal.

Spelt

Held in the MICHELIN guide's selection, fifty metres from Clovis: Raphaël in the kitchen, Marion on desserts. Straightforward bistronomy, a tasting menu in the evening, and a spelt risotto with lobster that is the signature of the house — « spelt » being the English for épeautre.

At Le Bar-sur-Loup and Pont-du-Loup

Down in the valley, on the gorge road. Both have a car park, which is rare here.

L'École des Filles

In the village's former girls' school, built in 1929: the classrooms are now the dining rooms and the playground is the terrace. Listed in the MICHELIN guide, in Gault&Millau and with the Restaurateurs de France. Market cooking, in a setting nobody wanted to erase.

L'Auberge des gorges du Loup
4 route de Grasse, Pont-du-Loup, Tourrettes-sur-Loup
The inn at Pont-du-Loup, at the mouth of the gorges, directly opposite the Confiserie Florian. No distinction, but it is the only table at the foot of the gorges and it has a terrace by the water. Handy when you are combining the confectionery and the waterfalls.

🚕 I'll drive you there — and I'll come back for you when the meal is over. The gorge road is narrow, cut into the cliff, and it does not go well after a lunch that has run long.
