Back country

Valberg

The driver’s guide

The mountain resort closest to the French Riviera: 90 kilometres of pistes between 1,500 and 2,066 metres, an hour and a half from the sea. The first village resort in the Southern Alps to earn the Flocon Vert label, and a Famille Plus resort. Open 365 days a year, with a summer toboggan run and a golf course at 1,700 metres. The addresses I give my own passengers, each with its phone number, its website and directions.

Restaurants

⚠️ SAID PLAINLY: Valberg has no distinguished table — no MICHELIN star, no Bib Gourmand, no label. What you eat here is the mountain cooking of the back country: chard tart, ravioli, ewe's-milk cheese, game in season. Here are three addresses, given for what they are.

In the resort and at Beuil

Two in Valberg, one in the village of Beuil, six kilometres away. All need booking in season.

In the resort and at Beuil
La Meranda
Valberg, Péone
A regional table right in the centre of the resort, on the main street. You eat the cooking of the back country here, with no staging. No distinction: it is a village-resort restaurant, open in season.

Le Restaurant du Golf
Golf de Valberg, Péone
The restaurant of the Valberg golf course, away from the resort, with a terrace looking at Mont Mounier and the summits of the Mercantour. It is the best view from a table in Valberg — and the quietest, because nobody thinks of driving up to it.

In the resort and at Beuil
Le Sapin Blanc
340 route du Sapin Blanc, Beuil
On the road between Valberg and Beuil, a regional table set apart from both. It is the practical address when you come down from the resort at the end of the day and do not want to eat on the main street.

🚕 I'll drive you there — and I'll come back for you when the meal is over. Eighty-five kilometres of mountain road up and the same back: exactly the trip you do not want to drive yourself after a meal.
